about

The main points are the sax(o)phone and time. All else is subordinate to these. Their hold cannot be underestimated. A metal tube full of holes with some wood, leather and cork. The allegory of time unveiling truth. The saxophone is a sound machine. It’s virtue (for me) is its ability to produce a huge variety of sounds (yes, sounds, not notes) with only the smallest of changes to finger position, embouchure, mouth cavity and thought process. New sounds can be derived from combinations of the aforementioned list and stretched out across time.

The instrument used for this recording is a Buescher 1937 Aristocrat “Art Deco” alto saxophone. This has been the main instrument for the last 8 years. Given its condition it had probably been left in a cupboard for years. The lacquer looks original and has an old slightly orange colour. The date is now 20th January 2024. Time has passed.

The other instruments heard are some game-calls, snare drum, cymbal, pocket trumpet and flute. The flute is new. It’s the first new instrument that I have bought in 40 years. There have been a few saxophones and guitars purchased, but that is just more of the same. The trumpet I see as an extension of the snare and not an instrument that I have ever attempted to develop any specific technique. The flute offers a new means of sound production that I need to engage with. To develop the facility I have on saxophone has taken 40 years. This new investigation must be achieved quickly. I’m guessing that I don’t have another 40 years, productive or otherwise. Again time intervenes.
