Alto saxophone with a Selmer S80 E mouthpiece and Francois Louis reed.

The purpose of this recording was to make a deliberate shift in the overall form of the improvisational scope. To draw more on the uniqueness of solo performance: exposing the smallest of details, concentration on individual sounds at the expense of interaction, to play with volume, timbre and rhythm in a manner that exaggerates the flow of ideas within a blank sonic landscape. Can you hear how I think?

No reverb has been added to the sound. For some years I've sought out rooms with a degree of reverberation or added a little electronically. For this recording the sound has been left deliberately without reverberation. With reverb, there's a certain resultant smoothing of the sound (sometimes to the point of sentimentality) that I wanted to avoid.

The choice of alto for this recording was deliberate. I feel that it is more malleable and alien. As more time is invested, it may harden with familiarity and be less flexible as are the soprano and sopranino. This isn't to say that the soprano and sopranino are redundant, just different.
